The last three weeks have been busy. ✨ I was tea The last three weeks have been busy.

✨ I was teaching the March Consultancy course when I needed to cancel the last afternoon for a trip to A&E with my eldest. Good news: he’s OK! and my lovely students were happy to defer the end of their course (sadly to different times)
✨ I then moved my homes on wheels to our beloved summer campsite.
✨ I went Easter camping with some lovely Slingababy family members.
✨ I spent a half day with the lovely Kirsty 🩷💜🩵 who has now attended the full four days of the Consultancy Course and is joining the hug of Slingababy consultants 🥳
✨ I hosted the online CPPD when we discussed all things money: budget, cashflow forecast, pricing, financial diaries, tax… because running a carrying service involves more than slings!
✨ I spent the last Saturday with four lovely humans discussing all things feeding and carrying. We discussed the intricacies of supporting families in their unique feeding journeys and how we could add slings to help families with all the tools available.

✨ And now to deal with the admin mountain that built up whilst I was otherwise busy!
There is nothing like an in-person hug from our co There is nothing like an in-person hug from our community 🩷💜🩵

There have been many CPPD weekends over the years, 23 weekends to be exact! That is a lot of topics at two workshops per weekend.
I really value those opportunities to learn and grow but my favourite part is, and probably always will be, being with such glorious humans and their unique wonderful hearts.

Thank you for showing up with honesty and vulnerability, with compassion and support, and with laughter, so much laughter!

I love you all so very much!!
As an active Slingababy consultant, you have acces As an active Slingababy consultant, you have access to 2 CPPD weekends a year, each with 2 workshops. That’s 4 workshops a year to increase your knowledge and skills!

We used to call them CPD, which stands for Continuing Professional Development but now we call them CPPD because we always make sure that there is a Personal aspect to it. What we do goes beyond the sling, beyond the technique and beyond the job. What we do is completely coloured by who we are. It just seemed important to acknowledge that nurturing ourselves is as important, maybe even more so, as the professional aspect.

Our community consists of practicing consultants AND “retired” ones. Having a diverse community brings so much wisdom, experience, love and care.

I have so much love for our little (not so little) family 🩷💜🩵 and I can’t wait to see some of them tomorrow for our Spring CPPD 🥳
“I want to know everything right now!!!” “I want m “I want to know everything right now!!!”
“I want my drawing to be perfect, mummy! Why is it not like it is in my head?”
“I’m so frustrated with slings, maybe they are not for me”

We want it all, and we want it now! Learning can be so frustrating, difficult, emotional.
There are necessary steps to be able to learn effectively. We can’t expect doing something for the first time and for it to look like we have done it for years. We need repetition with tweaking. We need to accept that the first attempt is going to be the furthest away from the end result we want (mostly). Every attempt will give us information, new learning components.
This being said, I believe that you cannot go from results to reflection without feeling the feelings and taking the time to regulate them. Being in an emotional state will make it harder for you to process your results, dare I say impossible.
Take the time to hear yourself and to be heard by those that matter to you. This will be so helpful in going forwards in your learning and in processing any difficult situation.

The good news is that the more you practice, the easier the process becomes. Go on, give that frustrating thing another try…
Yesterday, I was at the till of a shop and I saw s Yesterday, I was at the till of a shop and I saw someone with a stretchy wrap and all I could see was little legs, really little legs.
My mind started racing. All the conversations during the peer support courses came back to me.

“If there is immediate danger you must do something”
“If your brain won’t let it go if you said nothing, then consider saying something”
“Be kind and supportive.”
“You could put people off carrying”
“What if they get upset?”
“Babies die”
“I wish I had known”
So many perspectives to consider….

I paid for my shop, left the groceries with my son and went back in the shop.

I said something. They seemed to take the support as it was intended. I still felt uneasy, talking to strangers when unexpected has so many layers.
If it was you I talked to yesterday, I wish you so many loving cuddles and happy times. I would have hated for the road to stop at 5 weeks.

So why did I do it?
In the newborn stages, before neck control is strong, babies are at risk of positional asphyxia. It means that they might mechanically impede their breathing and without breathing, there is a risk of death.
This is why people talk about supporting the head, this is why you would have heard to keep the chin off the chest.

This is not a carrying issue. This is a newborn issue.
We need to ensure the airway is protected and that the airflow is clear. You want to be able to put two fingers between the chin and the chest and make sure there is nothing externally blocking the flow of air.
This is true in a car seat. This is true in a baby bouncer. This is true in a pushchair. This is true in your arms.

So keep those little babies safe.
If you use a sling, make sure the position is safe and sustainable. If anything changes, take action. Stay aware and responsive.

And if you need tips to keep your carrier well adjusted, or to improve support, do get in touch with a carrying consultant 🩷💜🩵
